As the cooler weather rolls in across Australia, it’s important to remember that our pets feel the chill just like we do. While we rug up and spend more time indoors, our furry friends may be exposed to winter conditions that can affect their comfort, health, and even safety.
At Hanrob Pet Hotels, we’ve cared for thousands of dogs and cats through every season for over 45 years. From cosy winter stays to daily daycare and training, we know exactly what it takes to keep pets healthy and happy during the colder months.
Whether your pet is a senior snoozer or a zoomie-loving pup, here are our top five expert tips for winter pet care – straight from our passionate team of carers and trusted by pet parents across Australia.
Not all pets need winter coats, but many short-haired, senior, or small breed dogs benefit from an extra layer during brisk mornings or chilly evening walks.
“We see a lot of older dogs who really struggle in winter without added warmth,” says Maddie, a senior pet carer at Hanrob. “A fleece-lined jacket or self-warming bed can make a world of difference for arthritic joints.”
Make sure any clothing fits snugly (not too tight) and doesn’t restrict movement. Avoid materials like wool that can catch or tug on fur – especially in long-haired breeds like Cavoodles or Border Collies.
Pro Tip: Orthopaedic bedding or heated mats are excellent for senior pets. Just remember to keep them in a safe, draught-free area and regularly check for signs of overheating.
Winter is not the time to skip grooming. A clean, mat-free coat acts as natural insulation. Matted fur traps moisture and cold air, making your pet more uncomfortable.
We often advise pet parents to continue regular brushing and nail checks throughout winter. And after walks?
Always give your dog’s paws a quick wipe-down when you get home. Cold concrete, wet grass, and lawn treatments can all irritate paw pads or cause dryness and cracking.
You can also apply paw balm before walks or consider dog booties for particularly cold climates or outdoor adventures.
With shorter days and wet weather, it’s easy for pets to become less active – and that can quickly lead to boredom or behavioural issues.
“When dogs don’t get enough mental stimulation in winter, we often see increased barking, pacing, or even chewing at home,” shares Matt, one of our dog trainers at Hanrob.
The fix? Enrichment. Use treat puzzles, hide-and-seek games, or food-dispensing toys to keep them engaged.
Better yet, consider a weekly session at Doggy Daycare or a Group Training Class. These structured environments provide both exercise and social stimulation, even when the weather’s less than ideal. Learn more about our dog training here
Just like us, pets often slow down during winter – and their dietary needs can change. While some outdoor or highly active dogs may need a calorie boost, others may need slightly less food to avoid weight gain.
It’s easy to overfeed when your dog’s curled up indoors more. So, pay attention to changes in weight and energy levels, and adjust portions accordingly.
Not sure? Have a chat with your vet or your local Hanrob team – we’re always happy to guide pet parents through seasonal feeding adjustments.
We all love the idea of bringing our pets with us everywhere – but sometimes, it’s kinder to let them stay somewhere warm and safe.
